STEM Education & Workforce
Hunter's platform does not specifically address science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. In general, he supports efforts to return school curriculum to the states, local communities and to the family.
Better Health for Americans
Rep. Hunter has consistently opposed bills that involve embryonic stem cell research, including the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005. He has supported bills such as the Alternative Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies Enhancement Act, which would direct federal funding to stem-cell research that does not rely on embryos.
Energy & Environment
In response to a question on a chat by the Washington Post, Hunter responded:
"Beyond the development of the energy spectrum, the energy independence challenge provides an opportunity for the private sector to join with America's colleges and universities and government research and development laboratories to produce a collaboration with respect to innovative new energy systems, which could result in America's domination of the alternative energy market. New innovations should be licensed to American manufacturers rather than shipped overseas for production. This new industry could provide enormous opportunity for the next generation. We could work together to make sure it happens."
National & Homeland Security
In Congress, Rep. Hunter served on the House Armed Services Committee, becoming Chairman of the full committee in 2002 and now serves as Ranking Member. Hunter focuses his efforts on providing resources during military conflicts and developing modernization initiatives to move new effective technologies into the battlefield. Hunter has been made securing the California-Mexico border a top priority.
